We will learn a lot this year in grade 3 language arts. Here is a little overview of some of the topics we will focus on:
Reading:
In grades K-2, students are learning to read. As students get older, they are also “reading to learn.” This is one reason why reading in grade three is so exciting!! Our classroom library has books organized by theme, so students can find “Good Fit Books” that are interesting to them.
Along with the daily reading that we do here at school, every student should be reading at home as well. Have your child read to you, have them listen to you read, or take turns. Any chance to practice “real life” reading is also valuable. (Recipes, road signs, etc.) Don’t forget to discuss together what you are reading! This will help with reading comprehension (your child's understanding of what he or she reads.)
Writing:
Students will have the opportunity to explore many different forms of writing this year. In grade 3, we will spend a great deal of time learning and practicing fictional narratives and procedure writing. Throughout the year we will work on developing the various traits of writing:
- ideas
- organization
- word choice
- voice
- conventions
- sentence fluency
Spelling/Word work: We will begin the year by reviewing the grade 2 "no excuse" spelling words.
Daily 5:
In our classroom, we use the Daily 5/Café system as part of our language arts program. During daily 5, students will rotate through the following activities:
- Read to Self
- Read to Someone
- Work on Writing
- Listen to Reading
- Word Work
